Summary of project

We propose to study the development of human expertise from the perspective of dynamical systems theory. We will investigate the micro-development of cognitive expertise in the form of changes in chess playing ability. In the past we have developed reliable and valid tests to measure chess expertise. Also, we developed statistical tools to test for transitions and variability in developmental processes. By using existing databases of rating developments and computer adaptive testing in time series designs we aim to answer questions about the occurrence of developmental discontinuities, the role of developmental variability, and the (un)predictability of non-linear cognitive development.
