Students’ training program

The curriculum part

The IOPS organizes seminars, which are advanced courses especially developed for IOPS students, and postdoctoral courses having a more elementary and global character, developed for postgraduate students (see also courses).

  • The IOPS student attends a minimum of 4 IOPS seminars or IOPS postdoctoral courses during his or her project. Besides this requirement, one may follow more IOPS seminars or courses, and one may follow courses outside the IOPS (e.g., scientific writing in English, presentation of research results, mathematical statistics, numerical analysis).
  • The IOPS student spends 15% of his / her time on seminars and courses. About half of the educational program has to be related directly to the content of the PhD-project whereas the remaining half can be devoted to more general topics.
  • The time spend on seminars and courses work is spread out during the course of the PhD project in the following way: first year: approx. 25%; second year: approx. 20%; third year approx. 10%; fourth year approx. 5%.

The research part

IOPS teachers, having an international reputation in a research field supervise the IOPS students. Each student has regular appointments with a assigned supervisor (on average about one hour a week). The student may also consult with other IOPS teachers.

The PhD project lasts 4 years and results in a dissertation. The IOPS student presents his or her research results on two occasions: once during the first year of the project on a national IOPS meeting, and once during the last year on an international IOPS meeting.

When a PhD project ends prematurely, the director of the IOPS will take exit interviews with the IOPS student and his or her supervisor separately.
